The Ice Age Trail 50 is one of America’s “classic” ultramarathons. Run mostly on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in southeastern Wisconsin (about an hour's drive from Milwaukee and Madison), the course takes runners on a tour of the unique geologic features left by the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Evergreen and deciduous forests, natural prairies, ponds, marshes and kettles are all part of this diverse and beautiful landscape. Rated 3/3 by Ultrarunning magazine, the terrain varies from rolling cross country ski trails to twisting, root and rock-covered single track.
As one of the races in the Montrail UltraCup Championship Series, Ice Age always attracts a competitive field. The 5:53:21 50-mile course record has been standing since 1988 (Andy Jones). The women's course record (7:04:00) was set by Donna Perkins 17 years ago -- and only two age division records have been broken in the last 10 years.
With plentiful aid stations, superior volunteer support and trail markings, the Ice Age 50 is a great introduction to trail running and the sport of ultrarunning.
