Fearless Leader brought an important news clipping from June, 1981. Two races: Half Marathon on June 14, 1981. Over 400 runners compete in this CARA race. Riis had 5 members running. Gail Varner won the women's 19-29 age division with a time of 1:43:29. She received a trophy. There was a DesPlaines 10,000 meter race on June 7, 1981. Karen Morris was 2nd in 41:33 and Gail Varner was 3rd in 42:47. Riis had 5 runners competing: Chris Precht 1:24:10, Pete Casa 1:42:38, Gail Varner 1:43:29, Jim Hall 1:50:29, Harold Comm 2:29:31.
