THE 2015 ICE AGE TRAIL RACES ARE SOLD OUT! SEE YOU ON MAY 9TH! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER AT THIS YEAR'S RACE, PLEASE REGISTER BELOW. THANKS EVERYONE!
The Ice Age Trail 50 is one of America’s classic ultramarathons, run every year since 1982. Located in Wisconsin's Southern Kettle Moraine Forest, the race start is about one hour southwest of Milwaukee, one hour southeast of Madison and 1.5-2 hours northwest of Chicago.
The ultra courses follow the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, taking runners on a tour of the unique geologic features left by the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Evergreen and deciduous forests, natural prairies, ponds, marshes and kettles are all part of this diverse and beautiful landscape. Rated 3/3 by Ultrarunning magazine, the terrain varies from rolling cross country ski trails to twisting, root and rock-covered single track. The Half Marathon course traverses wooded cross country ski trails within the Southern Kettle Moraine forest.
All three races -- 50-mile, 50k and Half Marathon -- generally sell out, so interested runners are advised to sign up quickly. There is a 450 runner cap for the 50-mile race; 200 for the 50k and 175 for the Half Marathon.
Two new 50-mile course records were set in 2014. Max King of Bend, Oregon smashed the 26-year old men's record, running 5:41:07 and Nebraska's Kaci Lickteig took five minutes off Cassie Scallon's 2013 CR, running the course in 6:41:39.
Both the men's and women's 50k records were set in 2004 by Scott Creel (3:14:05) and Nikki Kimball (3:53:16), respectively. Meghan Arbogast set a new Master's women record in 2013, running 4:04:29.
With plentiful aid stations, ample trail markers and experienced volunteer support, the Ice Age 50 is a great introduction to trail running and the sport of ultrarunning.
