Description:
The Student Nurses Association at Indiana University Northwest is hosting a 5K walk/run on Saturday, April 25th at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, IN.

We are raising funds for the children of a fellow nursing student alumni, Nina Castro. Nina Castro graduated from IUN’s School of Nursing Program in 2010. Nina was a bright and caring young woman who was making a new life for herself and her children. After graduation Nina worked for St. Catherine’s hospital. The employees at St. Catherine’s hospital described Nina as a highly respected employee that put her heart into her work and consistently looked out for the best interests of her patients. Although Nina was always seen smiling and full of life, she lived with a dark secret. Nina was a victim of domestic violence. When Nina tried to take her and her children out of the situation, Nina's life was unfairly taken by her abuser. Statistically, victims who leave their abusers are in even greater danger, increasing their risk of being killed by 75 percent, according to research by the U.S. Department of Justice.

We want to honor Nina’s one-year memorial with this 5K run/walk and are hoping to raise money for Nina’s two teenaged children. Ninety percent of the proceeds raised for this event will be given to the Nina Castro Memorial Children’s Education Trust Fund that goes towards her children’s college education. In addition to giving funds to Nina’s children, we donating ten percent of proceeds raised to Domestic Violence centers in the NWI. An executive director of Hammond-based Haven House stated that numbers have surged over this past year and they’re at their highest census in five years. Domestic violence is very prevalent and one of the biggest issues is getting people to speak up. Sometimes victims are scared or ashamed to reach out for help or, in essence, sacrifice their own safety for the safety of their children. By raising awareness, we are hoping it will urge any victims of abuse or violence, in fear for their safety or the safety of their children, or know someone who is a victim to PLEASE reach out for help.

On behalf of the IUN Student Nurses Association, we would like to invite you to help us raise awareness on domestic violence. If you cannot attend the race please consider signing up anyways or donating. If you sign up before April 13th you will still receive a free tshirt, in addition, the money will go towards a great cause! Most victims who decide to leave their abusers have to leave everything behind and start over. Even a dollar donation would go a long way to these people in need.
