23rd Annual Fall-Season Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50/50!

The 23rd Annual Fall Edition of the Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50/50 was held once again at the city's Foster Beach House north-side location. Was it cold, windy, threatening rain and snow, etc., like the typical race day weather for the Fall 50/50?... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! We were blessed with likely the best fall weather in Chicago Lakefront Ultra race day history - No Wind, Sunny, and Temps 50-60 F.

Thanks to the ultra running community of volunteers who generously staffed the aid stations...

* North Ave Beach House - Flatlander Ultrarunners:
Linda Lopez (Aid Station Captain), Dave Secord, Jen Price, Chris Connelly, Luis Plascencia, Mark Hill, Amy Hanrahan, Kristin Van Andel, and Sean McKiel. Linda fired up the Coleman grill and served up brats and hot dogs throughout the day.

* Foster Ave Beach House:
Marc Anguiano, Justin Heller, Rachel Helmick, Isabel Aklestad, and Matt O'Bryant all helped ensure people crossed the timing mats at the turnaround and assisted with hydration and nutrition throughout the day.

* Morning Setup Crew at Foster Ave Beach House:
Marc Anquiano, Matt O'Bryant, Justin Heller, Rachel Helmick, and Isabel Aklestad.

* Check-in / Welcome crew:
Rachel Helmick and Isabel Aklestad

* Finish line recording / Awards managing:
Beth McCloskey and Kim Kocher

* Picture Guys and Gal:
Matt O'Bryant brought his GoPro camera and took tons of pictures and some video clips capturing most of the day and many finish line photos (the link to the Google photo gallery is below). Bernard Lyles arrived in the morning before the 50 mile 7:00 am gun time and was taking video clips and pictures on his iPhone while cheering on all the runners. Bernard is an avid FaceBook user and posted lots of stuff there. Michelle Thom also took lots of photos all day long, both at the finish line and on the course. Michelle's photos and Jeff Fleitz's photos are posted on the Google Photos drive that Matt O'Bryant set up.

RACE RECAP:

We had about a dozen 50K runners request an early start to get a one-hour head start going off at 7:00 am with the 50 mile race. Four 50 miler runners also early started close to 6:30 am - they were all first time 50 mile runners and wanted a little extra time, just in case. 34 runners started the 50 mile race; 103 runners started the 50K race. Of those runners, we had 29 finishers in the 50 mile earning a belt buckle (new, updated design) and 94 finishers in the 50K earning an assortment of finishers' medals (finally ran through all the old mixed inventory of medals).

The 50 mile race started at 7:09:17 am with a slightly delayed start due to late delivery of port-o-potties... we needed to give everyone a chance to do their business before taking care of business. We had an absolutely amazing sunrise coming up over the lake starting around 6:50 am and extending until about 7:20 am, check out the amazing sunrise photos at the photo link below. The 50K race started promptly at 8:00:00 am. Did I mention how perfect the weather was today? There was not a hint of wind all day and temperatures were in the high 40's first thing in the morning and climbed to about 60 F in the sunny afternoon, never a cloud in the sky. What a perfect day for a very long run on the lakefront!

* 50 Mile Race Top Finishers:
The 50 Mile overall top finisher was Chicago Lakefront veteran Dan "Kitti" Kittivanichkulkrai, 41 of Chicago who ran a 50 mile PR with a time of 6:45:46. Not far behind was Lucas Schirr, 24 of Chicago finishing 7:07:45; followed by First Female Rachel Burke, 35 of Chicago in 7:20:49 - Rachel is another Chicago Lakefront veteran runner. Michael Burton, 32 of Chicago rounded out the male podium with the 4th place overall finish with a time of 7:43:13.

The 50 Mile female podium started with Rachel Burke finishing 3rd overall as mentioned above, followed by Kendra Frigo, 50 of Naperville, IL in a time of 8:12:12 and then Concetta Macko, 31 of Pittsburgh, PA in 8:50:42.

* 50K Race Top Finishers:
The 50K race was led by very speedy Nolan McKenna, 27 of Winfield, IL making a valiant effort to run sub-3 hours staying on pace until the last loop, but still finished 3:04:48 well ahead of the rest of the pack and setting a new Fall 50/50 course record by over 10 minutes! Congradtulations, Nolan! The next two finishers were Jacobus Wijpkema, 45 of Chicago in 3:46:51 and Brian Robinson (last year's Fall 50/50 defending champion), 36 of Chicago in 3:50:59 to round out the male and overall podium. Close behind in 4th place overall and first female was Victoria DiGiannantonio, 36 of Chicago finishing in 3:56:03. The next two female finishers were Amiee Haraf, 29 of Palos Park, IL in 4:22:11 and Paige Douglass, 28 of Hollywood, FL in 4:26:45 rounding out the female podium.

The 50 mile race Overall Top Male Dan Kittivanichkulkrai, and Overall Top Female Rachel Burke as well as the 50K Overall Top Male Nolan McKenna, and Overall Top Female Victoria DiGiannantonio earned etched crystal column awards. 10-year top-three age group winners earned etched Chicago Lakefront Ultras "Made the Podium" pint glasses. Nearly 40% of our runners were either First Time Ultra Finishers or First Time 50 Mile Finishers earning "I Survived My First Ultra" pint glasses.
