The
Great Midwest Relay
is a team footrace that runs from Madison, WI through Milwaukee, WI to Chicago, IL. Scenic streets, trails, bike paths and parks make up the course as it winds 190 miles through pastoral, suburban and urban settings.
Captain Michael Davenport took notice of the Great Midwest Relay after its 2005 inaugural running. Michael figured he could put together a competitive team drawing from his Chicago area running friends who are always eager for a challenge.
Recruiting went well and Michael formed a 12-person,
Mixed-Open
team, consisting of (in relay order):
1. Bob Mitera
2. Kevin O'Neil
3. Ken Scharrman
4. Dave Cameron
5. Tina Chase
6. Jen Kuhn
7. Angie Paprocki
8. Bill Thom
9. Dan Ewan
10. Jim Stein
11. Mark Polinko
12. Michael Davenport
The team was organized into two vans, which shuttled members between transition areas. Each member ran three legs of approximately 5¼ miles. After running a leg a member would rest, wait, and prepare for their next rotation.
It took 22 hours, 9 minutes, 48 seconds for our Greater Chicago Running Team to cover the distance, which placed us 3rd overall of 62 finishing teams. Not bad for a first year team
!
Perhaps after a bit more team training with
blind handoffs
our team can move up even further… watch for the
Greater Chicago Running Team
in the 2007 edition of the Great Midwest Relay
