Our Lady of Victory Church is hosting its second annual 5k Fun Run/Race Fundraiser!

Come out Saturday, September 7, for a fun and exhilarating 5K (3.1mi) race around Portage Park! New this year is a 1-mile run/walk option! This event welcomes all manner of athlete: from the serious runner to the hobbyist or family looking for a great day in the park. While supplies last, participants will receive a goodie-bag with a complementary t-shirt!

The Victory Run will be held at Portage Park, located just blocks away from Our Lady of Victory Church. The main aim of the Victory Run is to promote community and wellness in the neighborhood. Proceeds from the race registration will support youth ministry activities at Our Lady of Victory.

Note: after a certain point, t-shirt sizes cannot be guaranteed.

IME AND LOCATION:

Our registration tents will be located at the Portage Park Field-house, which is located on Berteau at the northwest corner of the park (by Central and Berteau). We will be near the baseball field. Registration, the start/finish line, gear check, and food will be located at this area.

Limited parking is available at a parking lot located on Berteau Ave. Berteau is a one-way street, meaning you will have to enter it from Central Ave. Street parking is also available around the park.

Registration, including shirt, goodie-bag, and chip pick-up will begin at 7:00AM and end at 7:50AM. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU COME EARLY TO GET THROUGH REGISTRATION. We recommend getting there AT LEAST a half-hour early, in order to give yourself enough time to make your way through our registration stations, get your t-shirt, and attach your unique race chip. The RACE WILL START PROMPTLY AT 8:00AM, with the 1mile walk FOLLOWING AT 8:05AM. There will be food and drink available at our tents before and after the race, as well as coffee generously provided for by Weston's Coffee and Tap, located on Milwaukee across the street from the Jefferson Park Metra.

While we are trying to work out a solution with the Park, we can only guarantee that bathrooms will be open after 8AM. Please make sure you are ready and refreshed before you arrive at the park!

REGISTRATION:

Our Registration station will be comprised of four distinct areas. You will proceed through all of them in order:

1) Registration verification : This determines whether the participant is signing up the day-of or has pre-registered. Pre-registered participants will verify their name and event and proceed to the next station. Day-of registrants will have to fill out a form and waiver before being handed their bib number.
2) Race bib pick-up : Each 5K or 1mile event participant is assigned a unique bib number. DO NOT CONFUSE BIB NUMBERS IF YOU ARE IN A GROUP. This bib number will be tied to your unique chip which in turn calculates your time, which is crucial for determining the medal winners for our age categories. At this station, you will state your name and receive your bib. Pins will be available to attach the bib to your shirt.
3) T-shirt and Goodie-bag pick-up : Each participant will proceed to pick up their shirts and goodie-bags. Shirts will be laid out by size, and a list will be present recording the size you signed up with. If you discover a shirt does not fit you, please wait until after the race to see if there is an extra shirt we can provide - we have to make sure everyone receives shirts before we start determining swap-outs. Remember that we only have a limited number of each size, so that as the event goes on, we cannot guarantee everyone receiving the shirt size they requested. This means getting their earlier is better!
4) Unique Race-Chip pick-up : Your bib number will then determine which race chip has been assigned to you. Take the chip and attach it to your shoe. Volunteers will be present to assist you if need be. This chip is the most important article for the race, so make sure it is securely attached to you!

UNIQUE RACE CHIP IDENTIFIERS

Each participant, whether or not they signed up for the 5k (3-mile) or 1-mile event will be given a chip. This means that the one-mile event will still be timed, and you can view the results on the website runrace.net. The 1-mile event is not exclusively for walkers, but for those who want a shorter distance to participate for the event.

It must be said, but the chips are of the utmost importance. You must not take a family member's chip and place it on your person. You must not lose your chip! These are assigned to your unique registration information, containing your age category, event, and name. This is what we use to determine our winners across our seven categories, and it is important that the event is seen as fair by all participants. We would not want children winning medals in the male/female 40-49 year-old categories, or vice versa. That means you must make sure you use the correct bib-number, which in turn will supply you with the correct chip.

The chip works by crossing over the special blue-mat provided for by RunRace/KemperTech. You MUST CROSS THIS MAT in order for your times to be valid! Not crossing over the mat will not record your time and disqualify you from the award ceremony.

If you lose the chip, you will be subject to a $35.00 replacement fee by KemperTech, the company providing the timer, chips, and website for our race. So make sure that it is securely tied to your person! There are twist-ties on the chip itself to attach it to your shoe.

RACE AND COURSE

The starting line will be by the registration stations, as mentioned above. Before the race begins, the race director will proceed to outline the course. The course takes runners and walkers both inside and outside the park boundaries, and -unlike last year- remains entirely on hard-top surface (meaning no grass detours). Volunteers will also be out on the course to point the right way for people. A map will be available for consultation at the station. Representatives from XSport fitness will lead participants in a stretch warm-up before the race to prepare their bodies.

AWARDS AND RAFFLES:

Thanks to generous support from our sponsors, we have many amazing prizes to give away at the Victory Run!

The raffle will take place after the award medals are handed out. In order to win, you need to be present when your name is called. Don't miss out on these amazing prizes!
